A rallying menu.

by Jason Stone

Uber Eats: “Bring It” - 60s

During these straitened times, we need a morale boost wherever we can find it, and so many current commercials seek to hit an uplifting tone with a rallying cry. This splendid ad for Uber Eats simultaneously lampoons this fashion, and participates in it. An Uber driver delivers an eclectic array of different food items to the demoralised staff of a dismal-looking workplace, describing each as he hands them out.

The tempo of his voice rises as he seeks to defibrillate this sorry collection of people out of their misery. At first, it feels as though his seeds are falling on hardened ground with little hope of taking root, but, little-by-little he sparks a bit of life into his audience, and their enthusiasm slowly begins to mirror his.

Director Mike Warzin draws a restrained performance from his lead, and that's exactly what's required to make this believable for a British audience. The other actors are understated too, and this combination ensures that it is all nicely tongue-in-cheek. It's immensely clever to construct an inspirational speech wholly from menu items, and Warzin and his lead deserve a lot of credit for pulling it off.

An additional subtle thing about this script is the way it indirectly reminds the audience that a delivery from the advertised company can be sourced from a variety of different food outlets… something which should ensure that everyone can have whatever it is they need to cheer them up.

And God knows we need cheering up as the Brexity chickens come home to roost... with no one available to humanely slaughter them for us.
