Sign of the times

by Alice May

Skype: “Hedley's College” - 2 mins

This latest spot for Skype by Yannakis Jones demonstrates the positive side of connectivity in our tech-dependent world. Hedley's College in Newcastle works with disabled people of all levels of independence, and its emphasis is on visual communication is what drives its success.

Skype's crucial role among staff and students is touchingly brought home when Ryan's support tutors - and his friend Anthony - check in with him during work experience. The screen is divided into four, with the differing parties all catching up to find out how Ryan's day is going - and simply to say hello. Everyone at the college knows how to sign, so no-one is left out.

It's a gentle, deeply human film which fills us with a sense of the good that can come from being so contactable; and it's a refreshing change from the vague anxiety that the ravenous maw of social media so often engenders.
