Short Films: “Toke” - 6 mins 42s
This raw short film from Darkroom's Nono Ayuso explores the internal journey of a dancer - who never saw himself as disabled until other people decided he was. Toke Broni Strandby's contorted movements are strangely beautiful against a deserted city backdrop, caught between expressing anxiety and elation as the dancer's story unfolds. Ayuso also uses canny VFX to heighten the audience's emotional state, with spinning visuals and expressive changes in light and shadow drawing us ever-deeper into the film. An unsettlingly discordant soundtrack adds to the drama too, offering further insight into the central figure's ongoing exploration of their internal life - and how the outside world perceives it.
