Metric madness.

by Andrew MacGregor

Short Films: “Outrage” - 3 mins 05s

To quote Grampa Simpson, "The metric system is the tool of the devil!" One who shares this hatred of metres, grams, and litres is Tony Bennett (no, not that one) - secretary of Active Resistance to Metrication and scourge of signposts nationwide. This short but compelling documentary follows Bennett on manoeuvres in Bournemouth.

At first, itís hard to judge whether this is a spoof or not. Yet Bennett is serious about his stick-on signs that use feet, inches, and miles, as well as his belief that "most people would cheer" him and his fellow campaigners on. We doubt Madeleine McCann's parents will ever do so.

Where Bennett's imperial march will lead is unclear, but director Ashley Francis-Roy delivers an enlightening insight into the #ActiveResitanceToMetrication movement. They may want to consider a snappier hashtag though.
