Rina Sawayama: “XS” - 3 mins 38s

Director Ali Kurr’s latest collaboration with Rina Sawayama marks the release of her self-titled debut album, and delivers on the promise shown by previous track ‘STFU!'. With ‘XS’, the Japanese singer takes aim at wanton consumerism via the medium of shopping channels.

Both Kurr and Sawayama run with the premise, delivering a nightmarish blend of performance art and satire fuelled by R-17031993 aka RINA Water. Think snake oil for the wellness generation.

Alas, Sawayama’s avid product demonstrator can’t cope with such unchecked consumption ("Gimme just a little bit more, little bit of excess"), and the whole thing goes a bit Westworld at the halfway mark. The result is a wonderfully loopy piece of sci-fi with audiovisual bite.
