Reindeer Games

by Syd Briscoe

McDonald's: “Archie” - 90s

There comes a point in every teen's life where the magic of Christmas wears thin, when the whimsy of the season gives way to familial obligations and tinsel and twinkling lights are met with rolled eyes rather than delight. This 90" commercial for McDonald's, however, suggests that even the most cynical adolescent has a little festive spirit left in them.

The relationship between two sisters is portrayed through charming 3D visuals here, as the younger has her request to play turned down. Luckily, though, their resourceful dad manages to conjure up an alternative reindeer playmate - one who's far more amenable to flights of fancy.

The older sister's gradual thawing-out is delicately realised by director James Rouse, who ably shepherds the ad's shift into live action. The result is a worthy addition to the brand's ongoing carrot saga, bringing "reindeer treats" to the fore just in time for the festivities.
