Drumming up business

by Jason Stone

Ladbrokes: “Drummers” - 60s

This is one of those ideas which works even though you have no idea why. It is very strange to represent the tension of a penalty kick by showing dozens of drummers on the pitch, and hundreds more elsewhere. But the strangeness lands extremely well, and Sam Brown's flair for generating a spectacle enables the creation of a memorable and fun commercial.

We feel the need to offer a special mention to producer Polly Ruskin who had the unenviable task of enabling Brown and his cinematographer Patrick Meller to create as much of the commercial 'in camera' as possible. Something on the scale would be a logistical nightmare at the best of times, and as you may have noticed these are not the best of times... it must have been enormous challenge to cue everyone up.

The outcome makes it all worthwhile, and Ladbrokes seem certain to be in the forefront of gamblers' minds as new opportunities to squander their hard earned dough arise at the Euros.
