Kew Gardens: “Marianne North” - 2 mins 10s

This lovingly crafted film from Kew Gardens and animation studio Trunk celebrates the botanical art of Marianne North in time for International Women's Day. Drawing from North's extensive portfolio, the piece immerses viewers in the Victorian painter's comprehensive world tour.

Whether you're familiar with North's depictions of farmland, jungles, and temples or not, director Rok Predin ensures audiences appreciate the breadth of her work, as well as her desire to bring the planet's far-flung pleasures closer to home.

This is achieved through painstaking digital recreations of North's work, with subtle layering effects adding tangible depth to each painting. Their beauty is further amplified by Emilia Fox's narration and the strains of Debussy's ‘Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun' in the background.

The end result is a soothing jaunt through this chapter of art history, bolstered by some modern technical jiggery-pokery. Kew Gardens must hope it spurs curious punters to head North, as it were.
