Bring out your dead

Galaxy: “Audrey Hepburn” - 60s

Audrey Hepburn is the star of a new commercial for Galaxy set on Italy's Amalfi coast. The long-dead Hollywood actress is aboard a bus that's broken down - but isn't stranded for long as an attractive young man in a sports car finds himself appointed as her chauffeur after she's inspired by a bite of the advertised chocolate.

Rattling Stick's Daniel Kleinman in concert with the post-production boffins at Framestore have managed to integrate antique footage of Hepburn into newly-filmed footage to create a brand new scenario.

The effect is beguiling to say the least. No one can fault the technique and had we not known that this was how this commercial was made, we don't think we'd have been able to guess... but it nonetheless possesses a strange quality that - ironically - gives Hepburn's 'performance' a ghost-like feeling.

A super at the beginning of the ad reveals that members of Hepburn's family have given this project their blessing - in exchange for royalties which were presumably generous - and from what DAVID knows of Audrey Hepburn herself, we imagine she'd have been sanguine about this posthumous appearance (she was, after all, sanguine about most things) but we feel equally certain many will feel uneasy about an involvement she was unable to sanction.

Hower, visible evidence of this assent may help to assuage the concerns of anyone offended by the commercialisation of one of the true 'Hollywood Greats'.

NB. UPDATE: Our description didn't give enough credit to the fiendishly clever boffins at Framestore. As you'll discover if you read the first comment below, no antique footage was used in the making of this commercial - instead, employing the magic of CGI, Audrey Hepburn's face was superimposed on that of the actress who performed her role.
