Anything But Routine

by Syd Briscoe

Dancing On Ice: “Cold As Ice” - 60s

This dynamic promo for the new series of Dancing on Ice is filled with youthful enthusiasm. Director Claire Norowzian demonstrates an innate understanding of internet culture to add layers to the piece, which sees a man dance-skate his way through 8-bit video games, memes, and more.

Animated flair and a judicious use of VFX bring further vitality to the table, while playful split-screen images (roller coasters, rockets, crowns) embrace the inherently camp nature of the popular competition. It seems that after sixteen years, the show still has plenty to offer fans of all things spangly.

Passion can often be the secret sauce missing from these series, as celebrities stumble their way through routines for comedy effect as much as anything, but the magnetic central performance here shows that skating can be far more than a slippery joke. This is bound to entice new and old fans alike to tune in for the latest trip around the rink this January, and perhaps encourage the intrigued to have a go on their own time too.
