A New Dawn

by Syd Briscoe

Bank of America: “Commencement” - 60s

This lofty outing for the Bank of America may feel incongruous at present, given the overall mess the US is making of reopening after lockdown, but it offers businesses a sign that hope is on the horizon.

The bank have pledged $1 billion to help address the economic inequalities which have become increasingly apparent throughout the pandemic. Given there's a current unemployment rate of around 20%, it's a move which will doubtless be reassuring to many.

Graduations may not occur for students this year, and that makes the choice of metaphor all the more poignant here. Violet Davisís sombre voiceover could feel overblown in different circumstances, but here it only serves to highlight what a serious undertaking getting back to work is right now.
