Capturing the moment.

by Jason Stone

BT: “First Steps” - 40s

Technology gets a bad rap these days. Whether it's parents angrily accusing their teenage children of favouring screens over conversation (FYI: screens very often *are* conversation) or the idea that we're all surrendering our liberty to the data-gathering monoliths of Silicon Valley, you could be forgiven for thinking that mobile phones are the nexus of all modern day ills.

So this charming commercial provides a perfect antidote to all the cynicism. A woman whose work commitments make it impossible for her to witness all of her daughter's landmark moments in person is able to enjoy the sight of the youngster taking her first tentative steps when it's beamed to her phone.

Olly Blackburn has conjured a real intimacy and joyfulness with a perfectly judged execution of a very sweet script.

It's been incredibly well thought through... the fact that she's a medic rather than a high-powered businesswoman, and that she's on a bus rather than sat in a plush office underlines her everywoman quality and thereby ensures that even sexist bigots will forgive her for not being there.
