You had us at hello.

by Jason Stone

Vodafone: “Hello” - 60s

Occasionally a commercial pops up which looks like it's been made for the home audience... DAVID can picture this ad going down a storm when projected on to a big screen at Vodafone's annual shindig - being cheered to the rafters by phalanxes of staff after their livers have been gently marinaded in cheap wine.

It's big, brassy and it makes a statement about Vodafone's global power as a company but there's not a lot here to connect with the general public.

It's also a missed opportunity because it promises 'the story of hello' before limiting itself to various forms of greetings from around the world. In fact, the word 'hello' was an expression of surprise until the invention of the telephone when its manufacturers adopted it as the ideal greeting to use when answering it So the real story of 'hello' lends itself rather neatly to a TV commercial for a phone. Ah, well.
