Where to spend Christmas

by Alice May

Visa: “Local Shops” - 60s

A host of old-fashioned independent shops croon 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' as Visa exhorts us to spend money we don't have on a high street that doesn't exist. Or does it?

In some of our nicer small towns they're still there; and the attractive, nostalgic interiors presented to us by director Chris Palmer are a reminder that there's nothing quite like browsing those shops we happen upon IRL - as the kids say.

He does a fine job of making us want to reacquaint ourselves with wood-panelled bookstores and friendly local greengrocers as a panacea for contemporary life's uncertainty; and in doing so cleverly diminishes the satisfaction we think we derive from purchasing online in our jim-jams while dropping toast crumbs on our lap.
