VW Vans: “Check-Up” - 30s

At last week's Ciclope Festival in Berlin, Richard Brim spoke about the value of a WTF? moment in advertising. (Incidentally, if you weren't there, DAVID heartily recommends you track down this talk as soon as it's hoisted on to the Ciclope website.)

This film for VW's vans out of Brim's agency adam&eveDDB has a really powerful WTF? moment. Wherever you think this might be leading as a mechanic runs through a checklist of what's what, not many of you will anticipate that the van's owner is so impressed by this exhibition of thoroughness that he's going to expose his nether regions in hope of a similarly rigorous examination.

Men are notoriously reticent about investigating lumps which appear where they shouldn't and this is a neat way of pressing home the importance of getting an expert to take a look if there's even the slightest possibility that it's warranted.

Jim Gilchrist's light touch provides a perfect balance and ensures that the WTF? moment is maximised. And, importantly, that the health message is perfectly measured against the idea that VW's mechanical examination is reassuringly thorough.
