Rude awakenings.

by Jason Stone

Thomas Cook: “Different Beds” - 60s

This is a very curious conceit... but it works. The ad introduces us to a man with a very unusual problem: every time he goes to sleep, he has no idea where he'll wake up. Now, you may be thinking: that was me in my 20s - but, no, not like that. Or you may be thinking - as this is an ad for Thomas Cook - perhaps it's this fellow's job to test out different resorts or something. But, no, it's not that either. What we have here, in fact, is the premise for a really good episode of 'Black Mirror' (and by 'good' we mean one that doesn't have a stupid gimmick which turns it into a shit video game).

This man genuinely has no way of knowing where he'll wake up, and it could be anywhere. This is demonstrated by the strange circumstances that creatives Kevin Masters and Peter Giblin have asked director Ben Wheatley to place him in. They are seriously weird.

But his favourite awakenings are, naturally enough, those where he finds himself in a Thomas Cook hotel and he can enjoy everything that it has to offer. It's an unusual and entertaining way of arriving at a familiar proposition.
