Call Me In The Morning (ft Chip & Grim Sickers)

by Alice May

The Streets: “Call Me In The Morning (ft Chip & Grim Sickers)” - 4 mins 03s

Mike Skinner is back, directing his own video for new track 'Call Me In The Morning'. While the song has all the hallmark sounds of The Streets, it also features rappers Chip and Grim Sickers whose verses add a different mood; laying on lyrics at a pace that makes your ears bleed... in a good way.

Meanwhile, onscreen, Skinner is impossible to look away from. It's hard to discern what's going on, to decipher what the track's about, or fathom why he's weirdly detached from the proceedings; but slowly it begins to feel as if a sense of sorts is piecing itself together.

In an apartment entirely decked out in black, Skinner looks out of place trying to blend in with the girls and the rappers. Pale and clammy and pensive, it is nonetheless a discomfiture of his own making.

His self-mocking, antsy gestures vibe with the references Chip and Grim Sickers appear to be making about him: the 'house boy' with pretensions to their world, who struggles to be cool and struggles with booze and who can never quite work out whether the laughter's with him or at him.

It's all meta, of course, as he's the one drawing attention to this depiction of himself, but - as ever - it's a hugely compelling portrait of the vagaries of fame and the shadow of uncertainty it casts in its wake.
