The Hour: “Wasted” - 3 mins 55s

It's rare to see a video which is so perfectly aligned to the music track it promotes that the two are completely intertwined, but that's what you've got here in this film directed by Skunk's Ben Strebel for new music act The Hour.

It is a disturbing and challenging piece of work offering an interesting take on the notion of anonymity - an important dimension of The Hour who perform wearing masks in the hope that this will allow the band to "mutate and warp over time". In Strebel's promo, anonymity becomes a way of avoiding individual scrutiny for a group of people participating in a macabre game. He has created a piece of imagery which is so fascinating that you cannot tear your eyes away from it, even if you have to watch it between your fingers.

Its meaning is richly ambiguous which allows the viewer to make their own interpretation, or simply let the nihilism wash over them. Either way, the violence on display will make an imprint which may prove indelible.

It becomes impossible to separate the track from the promo and you almost feel as though the track was written as a soundtrack for the film, rather than the authorship occurring the other way around. This is the highest praise one can bestow upon a music video as it demonstrates a perfect of symbiosis between the different artists involved.

There's a suggestion of the press release that this is only the start of an ongoing collaboration between The Hour and Strebel... and DAVID is fascinated to see where it goes next.
