Puppets Behaving Badly

by Syd Briscoe

The Cuban Brothers: “I Hate Hate” - 4 mins 05s

Musical comedy group The Cuban Brothers celebrate twenty years in business with this entertaining video. 'I Hate Hate's timely message is one of peace and tolerance towards others, delivered with a humorous spark by singer Mike Keats - aka Miguel Mantovani.

Any potential preachy vibe is stripped away as soon as we're introduced to the promo's other protagonists: pupaphobes beware. Fluffy and colourful, the puppet gang read about "Krump's wall", flip each other off, and daub hateful graffiti on walls - all while Mantovani gives his best Sesame Street performance to try and turn them around.

There are some lovely moments of physical comedy throughout, including an inexplicably trouserless appearance from Mantovani. The rest of the group appearing in matching floral suits is the icing on top, as puppets and humans come together through dance. Weird and wonderful, this offers a sunny little break from the world's perpetual awfulness... and couldn't we all use that right about now.
