Thao & The Get Down Stay Down

by Andrew MacGregor

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down: “Phenom” - 2 mins 50s

Covid-19 continues to wreak havoc on creative enterprises around the world, and US five-piece Thao & The Get Down Stay Down are no exception. The original plan for new track ‘Phenom’ was a traditional location shoot… which, suffice to say, never happened.

Thanks to the wonders of video conferencing technology, however, co-directors Erin S Murray and Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux have delivered a multi-screen dance number that gives inspiration to those with cramped apartments and spotty internet connections.

Frontwoman Thao Nguyen takes the remote concept in her stride, resembling a caged animal as she cavorts in front of a black screen and spits out lyrics like “Don't you fucking touch me, I will gnash gnash gash”. Picture the opening sequence to The Brady Bunch with more frayed nerves.

Director: Erin S Murray / Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux
Producer: Victoria Fayad
Grip: Molly Skonieczny
Choreography: Erin S Murray
