Ashes to Diamonds

by Syd Briscoe

Sky Sports: “Women's Ashes” - 30s

Following the runaway success of the football Women's World Cup and the dynamic personalities of its players which won the hearts of the public at large, Sky Sports hopes to achieve a similar boost in popularity for the Women's Ashes cricket tournament.

These artful opening titles are a strong step in the right direction, as they introduce us to past and present players the casual cricket fan is unlikely to be familiar with. It's the sort of high-gloss treatment usually only afforded to the men's leagues, and speaks to a sea change in the way women's sport is perceived.

Whether sports aficionados will remain die-hard followers of women's football and cricket after the hype dies down remains to be seen, but - like the mural featured here - the excitement will take some elbow grease to wash away.
