Short Films: “What Kinda Music” - 6 mins 27s

Joshua Osborne’s mellifluous documentary follows guitarist Tom Misch and drummer Yussef Dayes as they prepare to launch ‘What Kinda Music’ - a collaboration that started over a decade ago. Probably.

According to Misch, the first time he saw Yussef play was at a school talent show… although it may have been another “insane” teenage drummer entirely. Whatever the case, the jazzy duo are a near-perfect match.

This is illustrated by an improvised jam filmed in one take by Osborne, who captures their musical repartee with fluid camerawork. Misch’s facial expressions in particular merit the close-up treatment.

Beyond the studio, Osborne makes vivid use of family photos and shots of south-east London to show what makes Misch and Dayes tick. Aided by a textured soundtrack, it’s a worthwhile glimpse into a shared love of making music.
