Mighty Good

by Syd Briscoe

Short Films: “The Mighty Grand Piton” - 90s

This impressive animated film from director Wesley Louis serves as a ‘trailer' for the greatest anime series never made: the story of The Mighty Grand Piton.

Like an anime twist on The Iron Giant, the ninety-second helping focuses on a young girl who travels with her family to Saint Lucia, only to rouse a mysterious mech from its slumber beneath the Piton mountains.

With a vibrant, colourful style which blends Japanese and Western influences fluidly, the film manages to convey a whole series' worth of emotional highs and lows in mere snapshots.

Visually beautiful and narratively intriguing, it's a jolting standalone piece of animation, though it remains to be seen whether Mighty Grand Piton achieves its franchise potential.
