Ry X: Bad Love

by Alice May

Ry X: “Bad Love” - 3 mins 11s

Irrum's languid, tropical promo for 'Bad Love' by Ry X borrows from a host of painterly influences - the still, ghostly young women of the Pre-Raphaelites; the lushness of the Impressionists; the strangeness of the Magic Realists.

Everything about the film is realised with loving attention. Andres Arochi's cinematography gives it an ethereal sensuality; you can taste the humidity; smell the vegetation. The imagery - ripe figs, darting snakes, overblown flowers on the brink of toppling into decay - feel allegorical. It is beautiful and surreal.

The song itself is no great shakes, which is a shame. Ry X and his beard lurk in the undergrowth as his voice meanders aimlessly along, and it's hard to resist the urge to reach into the screen and give him a good shake. Let's hope he appreciates the fact that he's got a far better promo than he deserves.
