Black and white Christmas.

by Syd Briscoe

Refuge: “Mistletoe” - 60s

This clever ad for domestic violence charity Refuge offers a visceral demonstration of how a relationship can turn upside down. A woman relates her excitement about spending Christmas with her partner to the camera, only for the tone to shift dramatically when the script is reversed.

Bolstered by smart writing and a lovely, nuanced central performance, this makes for affecting viewing. Director Steve Reeves has struck just the right emotional tone, letting us invest in the protagonist's joy - which makes it all the more impactful when it turns to fear.
