Refuge: “Hide and Seek (with Picturehouse)” - 60s

A game of hide and seek offers little respite in this ad for domestic abuse charity Refuge, which sees a boy attempt to drown out the screams around him by counting to a hundred. Needless to say, there's only so much a childish diversion like this can do to hold back the tide.

Director Lucy Bridger steadily cranks up the pressure as the boy covers his ears and continues his ritual. Slammed doors and thudding steps morph into violent outbursts - none of which are seen by the viewer, but felt regardless.

The final twist is also handled well, with Refuge offering victims a glimpse of the home life they deserve. As this well-calibrated film shows, for many, time is of the essence.
