Ghosts of Mortgage Past

by Syd Briscoe

Purple Bricks: “Regrets” - 60s

Purple Bricks explore pesky commission fees (or "commissery") in dramatic fashion in this operatic ad. A montage of people staring into the middle distance as though recalling a traumatic memory unfolds in syrupy slow motion, piquing our curiosity about what could possibly have sparked such a reaction.

Each scene is lovingly composed, as the camera pans out to reveal a woman drenching plates with gravy, a teacher letting anarchy reign, and a rugby player who's about to come back down to earth with a bump, among others.

The final reveal delivers a lovely sting in the tail, tying all the previous scenes together in wry fashion. It's effective way to draw attention to the online estate agency's offer, even if the ad may come too late for some.
