Let Freedom Ring

by Syd Briscoe

Project Everyone: “Freedom” - 2 mins 57s

Project Everyone's 2016 film - an upbeat yet in-your-face piece of work which recreated the energy of the original promo for the Spice Girls' 'Wannabe' with a serious twist - showed women and girls around the world having fun while asking to be given the rights they deserve.

This year they're no longer asking - they're demanding to be heard.

Beyoncé's 'Freedom' serves as the soundtrack to this year's video: a blistering performance piece in which girls embrace being 'small' and 'angry' and insist on being taken seriously. It's an inspiring call to arms which director M J Delaney executes with her usual panache.

The inclusion of American landmarks as backdrop to many shots is a striking change, but not surprising given recent threats to women's rights across the pond. Text relays grim statistics around violence, child marriage, and HIV infection worldwide, while fantastic performances from the kids suggest they have the power to change these things - but only if we help them.

This is powerful, confronting work which demands attention - now let's hope it inspires action in equal measure.
