Praise the shave.

by Syd Briscoe

Philips: “Shave Right” - 60s

While subscription-based rivals double-down on value, Philips bring gravitas to the act of shaving in this lofty commercial. Gone are sector standards like sharp suits and celebrity whiskers, with agency Ogilvy and director Meeto offering a more nuanced look at modern masculinity.

Fitness, fatherhood, and distinctive dressing are all covered as aspirational aspects of menkind, as are - more unusually - make-up artistry and a fierce commitment to individuality. It all adds up to the brand's plea to be a nerd, make mistakes, and be as soft or tough as you like - but for goodness sake, do it without shaving rash.
