Friends

by Andrew MacGregor

Pearl City: “Friends” - 3 mins 08s

There are plenty of muscles on show in this Pearl City promo, but, ironically, none belong to the two protagonists. They are a pair of gangly young men from Southport who wile away their time in the local arcade and lifting feather-light weights. Easing their boredom with cans of lager, the only time their eyes light up is when the female bodybuilders come to town.

Ripped, tanned, and dressed in glittery lingerie, the competitors - a line-up boasting both brawn and beauty - draw admiration from the watching crowd, as one of the two leads eats candy floss in awe.

Crucially, directing duo Grandmas downplay any hints of voyeurism, instead suggesting the discipline and pageantry of the contest are thrilling enough to certain impressionable minds.
