Operation Smile: “Face Mask” - 75s

This moving Operation Smile film stars a little girl with boundless energy. Despite the smog, she can't wait to don her face mask and explore the world. Whether it's skipping along crowded streets or assisting traffic cops, she brightens this drab Shanghai day - temporary relief from a hidden pain.

BOLD's Henry Mason coaxes a charming performance from his young lead. Her masked glee makes the reveal all the more affecting. The setting is key, too: Shanghai's eerie, polluted skies contrast with her sunny disposition.

It's an enlightening insight into China's birth defect issues. Stories involving children with cleft lips and palates make grim reading, but the advertised charity believe the right support can heal more lives.
