Bait and Switch

by Syd Briscoe

OnStar: “Anticlimactic” - 60s

This polished film for car security service OnStar toys with viewers' emotions to make a potent statement about their product. A peaceful suburban scene plays out undisturbed - cycling tykes greeting neighbours and even wearing their helmets correctly - unaware that nearby, a speeding threat looms.

Director Lisa Gunning sets up an effective bait-and-switch here, as the audience braces for an inevitable tragedy... which never happens thanks to the advertised service. It can be difficult to arouse interest for devices which only demonstrate their true value in rare cases (like car theft), but this film is certainly enough to make safety-conscious drivers think twice.
