Machines of Loving Grace

by Syd Briscoe

Short Films: “Server Room” - 3 mins 17s

Mankind's digital and physical futures merge in this enthralling short film from AB/CD/CD. Part dystopian hellscape meets cybernetic inferno, part warning against the places biotech integration could take us, it's as if an episode of Black Mirror took a postmodern literature degree and then dropped way too much acid in a VR lab.

Which is to say, it's great. Poetry from satirical American author Richard Brautigan accompanies the trippy visuals, which distort the natural world in increasingly bizarre ways. The droning audio and digital voice give the film an underlying menace, as the uncanny melding of natural and artificial wrong-foots the viewer at every turn.

There's a timely environmental message too, as humans are shown consuming artificial water, filtering air with mysterious breathing apparatus, and losing stand-offs against robots who require neither. When living in a present "watched over by machines of loving grace", this look into the future is as thought-provoking as it is sobering.
