Old and New

by Syd Briscoe

Nowness: “Icaria” - 2 mins 55s

This atmospheric short film tackles the legend of Icarus with a modern twist. Focused on a solo dancer and the transformative quality of their movement, the film makes great use of light and shadow in order to make things seem truly, well, mythical.

With an ambient soundtrack which switches from orchestral to electronic to complement the dance, director FX Goby uses unusual angles and jittery VFX to elevate what could have been a straightforward production into an ethereal delight.

Fusing the modern and the mythical in this fashion speaks to the enduring nature of art, especially when combined in new and powerful ways - much like the interpretation shown in this film.
