Save a Bro

by Syd Briscoe

Movember Foundation: “Signs” - 1 min 53s

Men are encouraged to recognise the signs of depression in this intriguing film for Movember. Much of the movement around men's mental health centres on that fact that, traditionally, men aren't particularly forthcoming with their feelings - particularly when they're negative. By prompting others to start the conversation, Movember hope to change all that.

The subtle indicators of mental ill-health are played out in various scenarios, with each bloke's contrasting normal behaviour displayed in unusual ways (written on a plate, printed on the back of a football jersey, etc). It's a neat device, and one which holds the viewer's attention as they wait for the next reveal.

While the excessive blokey-ness of the film's text ("have a convo, save a bro") feels a little forced, it's certainly appropriate for the campaign's message. Mental health is an everyday concern for any gender, and this subtle ad is effective in ensuring men know that includes regular geezers, too.
