Christmas belles.

by Jason Stone

Morrisons: “CLIC Sargent” - 73s

This affecting film draws attention to Morrisons' support of cancer charity CLIC Sargent. A number of children take turns to sing phrases from Jingle Bells and it's very sweet, but it's only when we learn that children being treated for various forms of cancer symbolically ring a bell when they've completed their treatment that we realise the true significance of the song.

The vignettes are understated and none of the children's singing voices have been enhanced giving it a lovely natural quality which underlines the vulnerability of all children in the face of ruthless disease. All of the most successful films in this sector are imbued with a hopeful note and this is no exception. Even if the iconography is a bit basic in the closing sequence, the uplifting sight of children ringing the bell with a sense of tentative triumph will stay with you.
