Sauce of all power.

by Andrew MacGregor

McDonnells: “Cult” - 60s

This lovely dollop of silliness from McDonnells sees the Irish food brand delve into the occult… or an especially niche branch of the occult, at any rate. After all, how many cults revere a plate of chips with curry sauce slathered on top?

The premise is brilliantly realised by director Chris Cottam, who lets his game cast summon their inner acolytes. As their chants of "chippus currius" set the tone, it's over to the leader to taste their savoury bounty. Alas, they didn't count on an overzealous cleaning lady…

It's just one of several beats that make the ad tick. From the main cultist's singular reactions to the drolly humdrum coda, Cottam squeezes every ounce out of Katie Kidd and Georgia Murphy's script. Tasty stuff.
