Meal Deal

by Syd Briscoe

McDonald's Happy Meals: “Negotiation” - 60s

A father and daughter conspire their way to a Big Mac and a Happy Meal respectively in this charming ad for McDonald's. While dad fantasises about getting into his sprog's good books, the daughter knows exactly what buttons to press - resulting in a cute yet gruelling battle of wits.

Aided by a handful of surreal flourishes (such as the girl imagining that tidying up would go an awful lot faster with zero-gravity involved) and a lovely sense of humour, this inner and outer conversation speaks to family-sized appetites everywhere.

The brand themselves are also in a strong negotiating position. Keen to avoid any possible censure from child obesity campaigners, the contents of the girl's Happy Meal box are left to the viewer's imagination… though we doubt any child would go to such lengths for a bag of cucumber sticks.
