I知 Not Where You Are

by Syd Briscoe

Marika Hackman: “I知 Not Where You Are” - 3 mins 49s

Folk-rock fave Marika Hackman's lyrics are often preoccupied with dysfunctional relationships, and latest outing 'I'm Not Where You Are' is no exception. The film opens with a dead-eyed Hackman losing a succession of lovers in the same way - not a single one sparking the barest hint of emotion.

Director Will Hooper creates an admirably grungy vibe here, as Hackman's haunting vocals couple with her striking non-reaction and detachment from the world around her.

The film then becomes a study in modern isolation - 'trying to find the point in human contact' and coming up empty. A final zombie-like walk away from the latest blow-up offers an unexpectedly amusing coda.
