Waking Up

by Andrew MacGregor

M J Cole: “Waking Up (ft. Freya Riding)” - 3 mins 18s

Director FILFURY aka Phil Robson keeps this hypnotic MJ Cole promo in the family as he casts his own son in the lead role. Set in a palatial mansion and the surrounding country roads, this three-minute film offers a heightened depiction of childhood innocence in more ways than one.

Ensuring his energetic son remains perfectly still on camera would be impressive enough, but FILFURY instead orchestrates an uncanny levitating act in opulent surroundings, with the lad's trusty bicycle joining him on his ascent.

Accompanied by Cole's inky, ambient sounds and singer Freya Ridings's soulful-beyond-her-years vocals, it's a soothing curio that's leavened by Robson Junior's expressive performance. Furthermore, it may inspire stressed adults to hop on their bikes and leave their worries in the dust.
