Loyle Carner: Sun of Jean

by Andrew MacGregor

Loyle Carner: “Sun of Jean” - 5 mins 07s

Rare is the rap video you can show your dear old mum. Credit to Loyle Carner Bullion’s Joao Retorta then for achieving such a feat. This ‘Sun of Jean’ promo brings mothers and sons together for a cuppa, a jigsaw, and a night on the sofa.

Languid and personable, MC Carner vocalizes an unshakable bond - “Cause ain't no love inside my heart… except for my mother and my diehards”. Evocative visuals bathe each scene in comforting hues, while Slaves fans will appreciate a bedroom cameo from drummer Isaac Holman.

But it’s Carner’s mum, Jean, who steals the show. While he plays keepy-uppy in a Nineties England top, she pays tribute to her son - all grown up, but still her “band-aid boy”. A disarming guest vocalist.
