Nosh and Nostalgia

by Syd Briscoe

Heinz: “Clean Plates” - 30s

Heinz mark one-hundred-and-fifty years of clean plates in this meticulously constructed ad. Directed by retro experts DOM&NIC, the film offers a top-down view on decades worth of dinners - from the great British fry-up to significantly fancier fare like, er, a jellied salad straight from the Sixties.

Accompanied by Mike and Bernie Winters' 'I Like It', the ad uses a mixture of astute tabletop photography and some canny film references (dancing potatoes, anyone?) to remind us of ketchup's ubiquitous place in pop culture. This is grub that is sure to stimulate both minds and tastebuds.
