Running commentary.

by Jason Stone

Guide Dogs: “We Need Each Other” - 40s

This film promoting the need for Guide Dogs makes its point very sweetly. A little girl is providing a running commentary as she plays football but it doesn't seem out of the ordinary - just an exhibition of her excitement. But, when you realise why she's doing it, it melts your heart. Her blind father is stood on the sidelines 'watching' her play and is able to keep up with the action via her enthusiastic narrative.

Charity work often goes for the heartstrings via the jugular, but this one tickles you into submission instead. Who could watch this without immediately appreciating the role played by this man's guide dog in providing him with the greatest opportunity to participate in his daughter's life? Karamarama's script has been handled perfectly by Outsider's Max Fisher, who underplays the reveal to perfection, making it as sweet to watch the seventeenth time as it was the first.
