Nobody Speak

by Alice May

DJ Shadow: “Nobody Speak (ft Run The Jewels)” - 3 mins 33s

Things are getting tense and personal at a summit meeting of the world's superpowers. "We the best," bristles a silver-haired elder statesman to his counterpart across the floor; "we will cut a frowny face in your chest." The nerve! "Fuck outta here," comes the response, then everything escalates and turns into a potty-mouthed bunfight.

Hey ho... that's politics for you. At least, a version of politics as delivered up by Sam Pilling of Pulse Films for DJ Shadow's 'Nobody Speak' featuring Run The Jewels. This ridiculously hooky track is the ultimate definition of hubris, and Pilling's vision of grown men throwing punches and stabbing each other with pencils in the name of leadership is the biz.

But it's the lipsyncing that provides the most inspired touch. Both men are syllable-perfect, and the words that issue forth from them are at once hilarious and terrifying in their childish swagger. "I am Death," says one; and to make sure we know how ruthless Death is, it's spelled out for us: "Only facts / I will shoot a baby duck if it quacks".

Women are present too and get stuck into the fisticuff action once it starts, but what if they'd been in the positions that the men are? Would they have threatened to "Flame your crew quicker than Trump fucks his youngest", and would it have even more impact if they did?

Ironically, it's the unexpected presence of another woman who brings a halt to all this - but not before a rather terrified piglet inexplicably appears, skittering among the flailing limbs and trying to escape the madness. It's the best-behaved creature there. We hope it wasn't too traumatised in the making of this video, and we'd really like to know who it votes for.
