100 Years and Counting

by Syd Briscoe

Channel 4: “#Vote100” - 90s

Channel 4 celebrates 100 years of women being able to vote with this emotive film directed by tantrum's Alex Boutell. An effective montage of clips shows women doing exactly what they're told they 'can't' do.

From playing sport to taking on high-powered careers and even swearing, the script is well-constructed and delivered in a forthright tone which refuses to be argued with. The path to modern women's liberation is clearly drawn here, showing the link between seemingly superficial aspects of freedom (haircuts, makeup) and the historic changes which allowed them to happen (access to birth control, the ability to own property).

It's a shrewd choice to end the film on a poignant note - the Suffragette movement and death of Emily Davison - to remind us how far we've come as a society... and how far we still have to go. Channel 4 delivers this message of support and celebration with their characteristic sincerity, and will air a series of programmes to celebrate the anniversary in the near future.
