Flying the Flag

by Syd Briscoe

Cardhu: “Helen's Flag” - 55s

This historical ad for Cardhu whisky offers a fresh take on a familiar genre. Many alcohol brands have explored the storied histories of their founders with period costumes and tales of rebellion... but few have pulled it off with such humour.

The film opens with Helen Cumming - the founder of Cardhu whisky - channelling Demelza from Poldark as she warns her fellow distillers that the authorities are en route to clamp down on their boozy business. Her quick thinking means the whisky is saved... hidden in a place nobody would suspect.

The period details here are lovely, meticulously executed from the costume work to a candle-lit grade. Slick work from director Joe Connor and all involved.
