Nothing Rhymes With...

by Syd Briscoe

CNN: “Orange” - 90s

CNN have commissioned a collection of informational films to create Colorscope - a series exploring the significance of colours across different cultures and points in history. Nexus Studios' Emmanuelle Walker is behind this intriguing instalment: Orange.

It's a lovely piece of work, with compelling animation which sets a breakneck pace as it fluidly rattles through more facts about orange than we might expect to exist. There's an understated humour here too, describing orange as representative of sunsets and budget airlines in the same breath.

The colour's duality - both beautiful and, when seen in nature, toxic - is reflected in the visuals, which combine clean simplicity with kaleidoscopic complexity. Polished work which makes the potentially dry subject matter fun.
