Gap Year 2008

by Syd Briscoe

APRE: “Gap Year 2008” - 4 mins 17s

This stylish promo from English electro-pop duo APRE takes typical gap year imagery to new heights. Director Will Hooper's piece explores a strange, minimalist world, replete with surrealistic touches as the action centres around a bathroom stall.

There's a nicely established sense of the uncanny throughout the promo, as the song's echoing tones seem to bounce off the bathroom's bare walls. From the stall having a plane window to sand slowly spreading across its floor, it creates an unsettling feeling of intrigue.

Meanwhile, the presence of selfie sticks and actual gap year footage suggest the film is caught between parodying the gap yah culture and paying homage to it. Nonetheless, it's one heck of a trip.
