ADCAN Winner.

by Jason Stone

ADCAN: “Young Health Movement: This is Social Media” - 60s

The overall winner of this year's ADCAN competition is a film for the Young Health Movement (YHM) - a charity which does pretty much what its name implies by disseminating information to young people about maintaining health and well-being.

The use of social media has become an increasingly significant factor in this arena as people struggle with the gap between their own lives and the idealised versions of their friends that they see online.

This excellent film by young filmmakers Peter Jones and Ben Kaufman addresses this issue satirically with a minute long piece which has deliberate echoes of Childish Gambino's 'This Is America'.

It's easy to see why this film was chosen for the main prize this year. Any message is more likely to hit its target if it's wrapped up with humour but it's incredibly important to make it clear that you're laughing with the target audience and not at them. This is beautifully judged because it takes the problem seriously but recognises that our relationship with social media is pretty ridiculous.
