Ed Sayers's ambition for Straight 8 is turning him into Phileas Fogg as he attempts to take his competition around the world in eighty events.
After a hugely successful event at Ciclope in Berlin last month, the carnival heads to Pattaya in Thailand for ADFEST 2018 where he's hoping companies from an exotic array of countries will try their hand at making a stunning film using a Super 8 camera; an audio device; and an awful lot of ingenuity.
So who won in Berlin? In a close fought competition with barely a sliver between the three winning entries, the trophy went to Julia Weber for her film Woman Potion.
That's a strange brew. Remind me of the Straight 8 rules again. You are sent a Super 8 cartridge by the organisers and you then have to send it back - still intact - once you've completed your film. As Super 8 is video only, you compile your soundtrack separately. Cinelab London develop the film which is then married with the soundtrack without adjustment. The completed films are then shown in competition where its makers will see it for the very first time alongside the audience.
That's an incredible challenge. It inspires all kinds of creativity... including some imaginative attempts to get around the rules and Ed and his team are quick to disqualify any entry which transgresses them.
How can I find out more about Julia Weber? She'll be appearing at the CraftWorks show at Focus on December 6th where she'll be interviewed by Jason Stone. You can attend for free by registering here.
And how do I enter the competition at ADFEST? Just go to the relevant page at Straight 8's website and follow the instructions. That's the easy bit.
